Logic Stage - Grades 5-8
The basic logic stage plan introduces the child to the instruments of the orchestra, artists and composers in a chronological order, and art skills in drawing, water coloring, and with polymer clay. Depending on which option you choose in art, these objectives will be covered in varying degrees.
Option 1: Picture study:
This could be the foundation for your art appreciation. This is an inexpensive, simple way to study great art. We have chosen pieces appropriate for children to introduce them to many of history's major artists. In the fifth grade plan, students look at art objects and architecture instead of specific artists. If you use this Option 1, your child will be introduced to 24 artists in the logic stage. (Grades 5-8)
Option 2: Art appreciation with great books:
This option uses art appreciation books with paintings or art objects to view each week. The art activities each week use historical coloring books to tie art to the historical time periods for each grade. Please see the overview chart at www.harmonyfinearts.com for specific time periods covered in each grade. The seventh grade plan also includes arts skills in water coloring and sculpting.
Option 3: Artistic Pursuits:
This option gives a plan for using Brenda Ellis' Artistic Pursuits books for art appreciation and art activities. Please see www.artisticpursuits.com for a more thorough description of these books.
Please note that the Artistic Pursuits book options do not stick to the time periods as stated in the overview chart.
| Grade 5 - | American Art |
| 6 - | American Art |
| 7 - | World Art |
| 8 - | World Art |
Harmony Fine Arts offers Artistic Pursuits as an option for art skills and should not be used as the foundation for art appreciation.
Please note: Grades 2, 5, 6, 7, & 8 of HFA use Artistic Pursuits as one of the options for art appreciation. At this time, all plans use the original version of Artistic Pursuits and not the newly revised edition [2008]. I am in the process of adding a supplemental page to each year plan that will assign the new pages for the 2008 revisions of Artistic Pursuits. Please email me if you need to have the new page numbers.
Listening and Music Appreciation:
You may choose to follow the plan to listen to the suggested composers. Many libraries have CDs of the major composers and this is an inexpensive introduction to composer study. The plan acquaints you with the major composers by offering book suggestions to go along with the listening schedule. If you use this option, your child will be introduced to 25 composers and the instruments of the orchestra in the logic stage. (Grades 5-8)
Music appreciation:
The plan acquaints you with major composers by offering book suggestions to go along with a listening schedule. You may choose to only follow the plan to listen to the suggested composers. If you use this option, your child will be introduced to 24 composers in the grammar stage. (Grades 1-4)
Logic Stage Recap:
1-2 hours per week doing picture study, art appreciation and/or an art activity depending on which options you choose
1 period per week (approx 45 minutes) listening to a composer and/or reading about the composer
